WOMEN IN MUSIC

"Mujeres excelentes han venido

en cualquier arte que el ingenio apura;

y quien haya bien historias bien leído

verá su fama andar clara y no oscura".

(Ariosto, Orlando Furioso, canto XIX)

The role of women has fortunately changed during the history. The importance of their social and institutional functions has been highly increased. This fact made us reflect on the selective process of the history to remember and select the most relevant composers.

The few times we have had the opportunity to know something about women in the music history were only at a specific roles such as an instrument teacher or as a modest performer. Women are supposed not to be a composer because this work is more associated to men.

In that period of time the creativity was denied by women’s capacity. It was though that women who developed their intellect, lost all their femininity.

Regarding this previous idea, Mnemusine proposes a musical repertoire all composed by women, whereby the audience could enjoy listening this relevant repertoire, as well as learning more about these personalities.
